Southern California ambient rockers Culprit hit the studio with Dryw Owens (From Indian Lakes, Consider the Thief) last week to start tracking their Easy Killer Records debut EP. PropertyOfZack is excited to bring you a Behind The Booth series from the band and an inside look at the creative process for the highly anticipated follow-up to 2011’s Analogue. Check out the second update below, which includes photos from Brian Fulda!

Five days down and about four to go, this new record is really starting to come together. We’re just about done tracking guitars, and the tones are sounding incredible so far. The other day we tested out some 50 year old tubes from an old radio in the vox ac30 we’re using to track, which produced some really nice results. We also picked up a ‘78 Marshall JMP 2204, which was a nice treat to be able to record with. Needless to say we have some pretty cool toys at our fingertips here to make for some sweet sounds. Oh, and the drum sound. Jason’s drums couldn’t sound any better. We’ve all really fallen in love with these songs and as we begin to layer more and more, the excitement builds higher. We really miss Jason though… he returned home on Tuesday to see family and resume work. Our days are definitely not the same, but we can’t wait to listen to our final product together in the coming weeks.

PropertyOfZack is excited to bring you a Behind The Booth series from the band and an inside look at the creative process for the highly anticipated follow-up to 2011’s Analogue. Check out the first update below!

Today was the end of day two, and consequently the finale of tracking all drum parts. We now have a solidified foundation of rhythm to build upon, which certainly feels redeeming.

We still have six more days to finish making this record. The studio we work out of is tucked away behind a strip mall in a suburb of Sacramento. A tall garage bay door is opened each morning to a spacial room, its interior riddled with musical equipment and live stage gear. An eclectic variety of modern and vintage tools are available to aid in creating a desired sound. It’s safe to say that we are all teeming with enthusiasm to get to use it in the coming days.

Our producer, Dryw, is steadfast and diligent behind his workstation. Sparked with a consistent energy and clicking his mouse with a veteran rapidity, not many minutes go to waste within these enduring ten hour studio days. Contrary to popular belief, the time spent in the studio that’s not tracking your own parts can require a lot of patience. It’s easy to become restless and feel antsy to get down to business on your own instrument. Still, we all sit here calmly in the control room, listening intently to the songs being blared repeatedly through the pair of monitors and making intricate revisions.
